Unifying the digital experience

The Vienna Tourism Board, a nonprofit organization founded in 1955, had a lofty vision: "inspiring the world to experience Vienna." However, they faced a significant challenge - offering a seamless content experience across multiple channels. With the shift towards digital destination marketing, users consumed content on various devices, making it crucial for Vienna Tourism to reach as many channels as possible. To achieve this, they needed a centralized Digital Asset Management (DAM) solution. The existing content management system (CMS) was cumbersome, offering poor usability and performance, leading to information overload for users. It was evident that a transformative solution was required. 

The quest for an all-in-one solution

Vienna Tourism set its sights on transforming its digital presence, embarking on a journey with implementation partner Babiel. After careful consideration, they selected CoreMedia as their new CMS. The project aimed to overhaul the system architecture and design a new website that catered to users' diverse needs. The technical challenges were immense, including managing four websites, delivering content in 11 languages, and handling tens of thousands of articles, locations, and media assets. In order to stay successful and provide a unified content experience, Vienna Tourism was determined to overcome these obstacles.

Redefining asset management

To offer value beyond traditional photos and videos, Vienna Tourism decided to curate extensive location information about Vienna, recognizing it as valuable content. The challenge lay in organizing and maintaining this vast collection of media assets and tracking their associations with relevant articles. Rather than opting for a separate DAM, they chose an integrated solution with CoreMedia's advanced asset management module. This decision allowed for better metadata categorization, enabling users to create compelling stories while efficiently utilizing assets. 

Throughout the project, Vienna Tourism embraced an agile approach, showcasing editors the progress after each sprint. They quickly realized that article and rich text editing had limitations, leading them to design a system with modular building blocks and annotated link lists. This innovative approach empowered editors to unleash their creativity easily. 

Agility and success: the outcome

With DAM integrated into CoreMedia, all rights management, warnings, and other essential features were seamlessly woven into the workflow. The results were remarkable. User engagement skyrocketed, with a 90% increase in user numbers and a significant boost in session duration and returning users, including a 40% reduction in page load times. The platform's business value soared as editors expressed satisfaction with the faster uploading, user-friendly location workflow, and convenient features. 

Vienna Tourism's transformation from an online travel guide to a global digital destination was a resounding success. CoreMedia's DAM solution not only provided a unified content experience but also improved user engagement and business performance significantly. With the challenges met and the vision realized, Vienna Tourism now stands tall as a shining example of digital transformation for the global tourism industry.
