DAK caters to its six million policyholders with a workforce of around 13,000 staff and no less than 800 local service points nationwide.
Making knowledge accessible
The "DAKintranet" project was launched with the aim of organizing the company's available knowledge and increasing its utility. The first project phase saw the Employee Guidebook moved to the DAKintranet. Around 9,000 pages long, the book details company policy and thus information relevant to job roles. Additional content from "sub-intranets" was also moved to the DAKintranet. The subject-related, structural and technical tasks involved in this major strategic project consumed well over 1,000 project person-days. And only a corporate web content management system could be considered as the technical foundation.
Knowledge management with CoreMedia CMS
Today, the intranet holds around 150,000 content objects. Previously, it was not unusual for two weeks to pass between departmental content creation and placement in staff folders – since it needed to be prepared, printed, distributed and sorted. Nowadays, the update process is finished in just a few hours.
Many tools simplify the day-to-day work of editing staff, such as a link checker that checks the availability of all links external to the DAKintranet, an integrated link tool for image maps and a URL abstraction layer mechanism, whereby DAKintranet content can provide "permalinks" to external services and applications by specifying an abstract link target. A team of fourteen dedicated editors is supported in content creation by about 700 decentralized authors.
At CeBIT 2007, the DAKintranet was presented with the "ECM World Practice Award" in the category "Intranet as knowledge web" – a quality and innovation prize for intranet solutions. In the next phase, DAK will use the "DAKw!ssen" project to introduce professional knowledge management, while ensuring that it is operated sustainably. Here, not only the DAKintranet but also DAK itself is taking a further step to achieving the cultural change of Enterprise 2.0.
