CoreMedia CMS - a group-wide standard

CoreMedia CMS - a group-wide standard

Deutsche Bahn (German Rail) is a modern service group providing holistic mobility and logistics solutions. The Deutsche Bahn (DB) Group’s internet and intranet presence consists of some 200 websites with around 10,000 individual pages, almost as many images and up to 5,000 downloadable files. Internally, some 43,000 employees regularly access Deutsche Bahn’s information services based on CoreMedia technology.

Heterogeneous CMS landscape

Before CoreMedia CMS was implemented, Deutsche Bahn’s information services were maintained by a wide variety of content management systems. Then Deutsche Bahn decided to migrate all these solutions to a single enterprise content management system (ECMS). After the project had begun, DB realized that the cost of developing and operating this ECMS would be very high and the expected savings could not be achieved. The software re-evaluation phase that followed led DB to choose CoreMedia CMS - primarily because of this solution’s low operating costs and rapid return on investment.

Group-wide Internet and intranet platform

The scheduled implementation period of 16 months was exceeded by just four days. The integration partner for CoreMedia CMS was IBM. Training over 200 DB employees to edit the system took very little time. The first website to be realized with CoreMedia was the new corporate portal, www.db.de. Now it is not just the group-wide intranet Bahn-net but also numerous websites of DB subsidiaries that are running on CoreMedia CMS. They include DB Fuhrpark, DB Systems, Deutsche Verkehrs-Assekuranz-Vermittlungs GmbH, Nieten Fracht-Logistik and Burgenlandbahn GmbH. The softwares multi-site management function has proved particularly beneficial because it allows group-wide websites and portals to be efficiently run for the various subsidiaries in several languages and designs.

W3C barrier-free compliance

CoreMedia CMS is technically equipped to comply with all the barrier-free requirements of the W3C guidelines. As a result, it was possible to pay careful attention to the requirements of people with disabilities and other special needs in designing the DB sites. In a Wedel Technical College survey of barrier-free sites, the DB website came second among Germany’s TOP 100 companies.

Half the price, twice the performance

“50% savings - CoreMedia will now be our standard solution through the Group.” That was how Jens Küpper, Online Manager of the DB Group, assessed the CoreMedia solution in a straight comparison with Vignette. “Besides, we can present content much quicker and ideally equipped for distributing digital content on all our channels - now and in future.”
