Leading Scandinavian Distributor InProdicon Launches DRM-Enabled Multi-Channel Music Distribution Platform with CoreMedia

Implementation of Multiple Innovative Business Models including Superdistribution with Major Label Content

Hamburg, Germany, and Stockholm, Sweden, February 14, 2005 – CoreMedia today announced that InProdicon, Scandinavia’s leading digital content distributor, has chosen CoreMedia Content Technology for CMS and DRM in its mobile music offering. By implementing CoreMedia, InProdicon is able to support innovative business models such as superdistribution based on the Open Mobile Alliance’s digital rights management (DRM) standard.

InProdicon owners have extensive experience in music retail and have sold over 500 million music tracks over the past two decades from Sony, Warner, BMG, EMI and Universal as well as several local record companies, InProdicon – the name stands for Independent Provider of Digital Content – is one of the most successful digital content resellers in Europe. Acting as a wholesaler for leading Nordic Internet portals, music stores, network providers and device manufacturers, the company has launched 13 download shops with a repertoire of over 300,000 items so far and plans to launch more than 30 shops throughout Europe and the USA over the coming months. InProdicon will launch its CoreMedia-supported mobile content services with the distribution of original ring tones, full music tracks and video clips and will expand to movies, audio books and other media types in the near future.

With CoreMedia’s Content Technology including its content and rights management solution, InProdicon enables music labels and other content owners to choose the level of protection they want for their content. Ranging from lightweight protection based on Forward-Lock and Combined Delivery, to the encrypted form of Separate Delivery using the Open Mobile Alliance’s OMA v1.0 standard, to the trusted and secure mechanisms of OMA v2.0.

Using the CoreMedia system, InProdicon is able to expand its music service to include the following:

  • Digital content services for broadband and mobile networks
  • Viral marketing through superdistribution between customers, including rewards
  • Delivery of preinstalled content on handsets and other CE-devices
  • Subscription-based and try-and-buy offerings, as well as gifting for digital content

In return, consumers are now able to back up purchased content, to use their content on different devices, and to securely share it with families and friends.

“We chose CoreMedia for several reasons, but the decisive factor was the fact that CoreMedia’s DRM system is fully interoperable with a broad range of consumer end devices, including PC’s, set top boxes, and handsets from manufacturers such as LG, Motorola, Nokia, Panasonic, Sharp, Siemens, and Sony Ericsson,” said David Hudert – Senior Vice President and CTO at InProdicon.

“We are thrilled that InProdicon chose our solution for its wireless music offering,” said Sören Stamer, founder and CEO of CoreMedia. “By deploying our system, InProdicon is able to offer its service through multiple channels, making it the ideal platform for the music and other content industries to expand their offerings to reach more customers.”

“For Warner Music it has been a natural to drive the process for a legal Nordic digital download platform,” said Jonas Siljemark, CEO at Warner Music. “The fact that InProdicon chose a solution that is based on OMA’s successful open DRM standard reinforced our decision to provide premium content to the music offering.”
