CoreMedia Releases Digital Rights Management for Mobile Services V 2.1 – Interoperable with 80 Handsets from 11 Leading Manufacturers

The First System on the Market to Support both Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) DRM 1.0 and 2.0 Standard

In its continued strategy to support open standards as specified in one of the quickest industry standardization processes ever, CoreMedia today announced the availability of its next generation service infrastructure for content protection and delivery. The announcement comes shortly before the final version of the Open Mobile Alliance’s (OMA) DRM 2.0 will become public later this month. CoreMedia’s modular Digital Rights Management (DRM) for Mobile Services version 2.1 enables mobile service providers and content suppliers to build an end-to-end delivery platform for premium content such as true tones, music tracks or video clips.

“CoreMedia is strongly committed to open standards and interoperability,” said Soeren Stamer, Co-Founder and CEO of CoreMedia. “Always keeping the consumer in mind by balancing the needs for content security and ease of use, we work closely with service providers, handset manufacturers, content owners as well as technology suppliers to ensure that we offer the best possible content delivery solution to the market.”

Content providers can choose the level of protection they want for their content - ranging from lightweight protection based on Forward Lock and Combined Delivery, to the encryption-based Separate Delivery using the Open Mobile Alliance’s OMA DRM 1.0 standard. The trusted and secure mechanisms of OMA DRM 2.0 add new business models such as enhanced peer-to-peer support with reward mechanisms, subscription, gifting, and streaming capabilities.

End consumers benefit from additional content management features that enable them to back up purchased content, to use their content on different devices, and to securely share it with family and friends.

“Today, CoreMedia’s DRM for Mobile Services supports 80 different handset models, making our solution interoperable with over 100 million phones from vendors such as LG Electronics, NEC, Motorola, Nokia, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Sagem, Sharp, Siemens, and Sony Ericsson over the next 12 months,” commented Willms Buhse, OMA Vice Chair and Director Products & Marketing at CoreMedia.

CoreMedia’s new architecture based on OMA DRM 2.0 includes the following DRM modules:

  • Ingest Server
  • Packaging Server for “on-the-fly” and offline packaging
  • License and Activation Server
  • Transaction Management Server
  • RightsLocker for Domains and Device Context
  • Multi-DRM Manager
  • Statistics and Reporting
