Dr. Willms Buhse, Executive Director

Executive Director Client Services

Since 2006, Dr. Willms Buhse has been responsible for the Client Services department, together with Lars Ferner. Head of Products & Marketing and member of the executive committee since November 2003, Dr. Willms Buhse is responsible for CoreMedia’s global marketing and communication as well as product management for CoreMedia DRM and CoreMedia CMS 2005.

“Being with CoreMedia means having the chance to offer world-class products, made by great people, on a global scale – based on open standards,” says the 35 year-old. “It’s all about convergence: about enabling an unmatched consumer experience with great infotainment products, on the devices that people want to use.”

Dr. Buhse has been active in the field of strategic technology and digital rights management for many years. Early in his career, he worked as a consultant in technology and strategy projects at the German top management consultancy group, Roland Berger & Partner and advised companies such as Volkswagen and Deutsche Bahn. After this, from 1999 to 2003, he worked with Bertelsmann AG and BMG in Gütersloh, Hamburg and New York, USA, where he co-founded Bertelsmann Digital World Services, a pioneer in the field of digital rights management (DRM).

Elected Vice Chair of the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) in 2003, Dr. Buhse plays a leading role in developing open standards for mobile content delivery. Dr. Buhse: “The OMA contributes to creating robust standards that allow operators to deliver premium content to consumers in a way that both secure and easy to use. So it’s a natural progression for CoreMedia DRM to be based on the OMA standards. It means a better user experience that can really exploit the benefits of convergence.” As the biggest step ever taken by a mobile operator to implement a DRM solution, Vodafone now uses CoreMedia DRM to ensure secure distribution of premium content to its mobile subscribers.

In 2006 Dr. Buhse was voted amongst the “Top 50 Most Influential People in Mobile Entertainment” worldwide by UK based Mobile Entertainment publication.

Dr. Buhse holds degrees in Industrial Engineering (Dipl.-Ing.) and in Management Sciences (Dipl.-Oec.) from the University of Hanover, Germany and Madrid, Spain. He gained his Ph.D. in Economics from the Technical University of Munich, with a research thesis entitled Digital Rights Management vs. the Darknet – Competitive Strategies and Business Models for the Music Industry. He has also written and edited two books on digital rights management, and has spoken at more than 110 conferences on the subject of digital distribution in the media industry. In addition, he advised the European Commission and several parliaments in the field of copyright legislation.

After several years in Madrid, Spain and New York, USA, Dr. Buhse now lives and works in Hamburg, Germany and is a member of the Recording Academy and the CMO Council.
